Archive and Restore Chromatography Data at Enterprise Scale

June 17, 2025

Chromatography data is the backbone of analytical labs in biopharma, spanning R&D and QC. But as infrastructure evolves, the challenge goes beyond simply storing more data. Labs need solutions that make data accessible, analytics-ready, and future-proof.

TetraScience offers a transformative approach to chromatography data archival and restore—one that not only modernizes infrastructure but also unlocks enterprise-wide visibility, compliance, and analytics.

The Challenge: Outdated Approaches Hold Labs Back

Chromatography generates vast amounts of data, but too often, most information remains locked in vendor-specific formats or isolated on aging local servers. This leads to:

  • Vendor lock-in and technical debt
  • High costs and complexity of on-premises storage
  • Inefficient data retrieval and compliance reporting
  • Limited scalability, searchability, and contextual insights
  • Manual, error-prone restore processes
  • Roadblocks to analytics and AI initiatives

Whether retiring a legacy chromatography data system (CDS) or consolidating data across multiple sites, labs need a secure and scalable way to extract, archive, and restore data.

The Solution: Cloud-native and Vendor-agnostic

The Tetra Scientific Data and AI Cloud™ transforms the archive and restore process for chromatography data. Here’s how.

Under the Hood

At the core is the Tetra Data Platform (TDP), which integrates with major CDS systems via lightweight Tetra Agents deployed on local servers.

  • The agents automatically extract and send raw chromatography data to the TDP.
  • In TDP, automated pipelines engineer the data into an open, vendor-agnostic format using an Intermediate Data Schema (IDS) and enrich it with critical metadata.
  • Structured, harmonized data can then power data apps like Chromatography Insights for visualization or downstream analysis.

Automated Archival Workflow

  1. Open: Projects remain available for changes and updates. After a specified period of inactivity (e.g., 360 days), they’re automatically flagged as inactive for archiving.
  2. Lock: The Tetra Agent applies a read lock and waits a designated period (e.g., 14 days) to avoid disrupting active work.
  3. Archive: Projects are extracted and uploaded to the TDP.
  4. Delete: Once archiving is confirmed, the original project is removed from the local CDS server, freeing storage space.

This process ensures data integrity through checksums and maintains full audit trails for regulatory compliance.

Flexible Restore—When and How You Need It

  • Granular search: Scientists and IT can search archives by project, method, sample set, or injection using TDP or dashboards in Chromatography Insights.
  • Restore on demand: Instantly restore archived projects to the CDS as needed, using the original vendor format—ideal for audits or reanalysis.
  • Preview without restore: Browse and inspect archived data down to the injection level, without needing to fully restore a project.
